Canvas: Extreme Course Makeover

Canvas: Extreme Course Makeover

During the summer of 2017, several PLNU faculty members participated in a faculty development program called Canvas: Extreme Course Makeover (ECM). This practical hands-on faculty development program is designed to help faculty use Canvas in more powerful ways in order to meet two goals:

To increase faculty work efficiency as they provide feedback to students and interact with them in more meaningful ways during the semester.

To enable faculty to more fully engage students in the learning process through interactive learning activities both inside and outside the classroom.

Faculty attend a total of 6 face-to-face training sessions in which they learned how to leverage various Canvas features such as modules, quizzes, discussions, rubrics and grading to increase work efficiency for themselves and their students. Faculty also participate in online discussions to explore topics such as flipped instruction and faith integration in order to engage learners more fully. Additional program topics include copyright compliance, embedding videos and incorporating open educational resources to expand the learning resources available to their students. Faculty are asked to redesign a course of their choosing during the program and receive personalized assistance to implement Canvas features that will promote the aforementioned goals. Faculty are also awarded a modest stipend for their course redesign.
